Full and half day hikes on the Root Glacier
Explore the fascinating
world of glaciers!
Your trip begins in McCarthy where you meet with your guide. The
guide will fit you for a pair of crampons before everyone jumps
into the van for a 15 minute ride to the historic town of Kennicott.
You'll get a brief tour of the town as we pass through what was
once a busy mining operation. Main street Kennicott becomes the
Root Glacier Trail and leads us along the top edge of the lateral
moraine of the Root.
Along the way you'll learn a bit of the
local history as well as some backgorund on how glaciers are formed,
advance and eventually retreat. In less than an hour you'll be at
the edge of the ice where the guide will give you some brief instructions
on how to fasten your crampons and how to walk with them. But don't
worry, it's not difficult and no prior experience is needed. And
our crampons will work with any type of boot including trail shoes.
Other Day Hike Opportunities
If you want to take a day trip adventure, but
walking on ice doesn't interest you, there are plenty of other possibilities
and destinations. Some of the options included:
Day Hike Rates: $125/person
- Day hike to Jumbo or Bonanza Mine site for some
history and stunning views from the ridge top.
- Kennicott River hike - a hike along the western
edge of the Kennicott Glacier moraine. Get glacier views without
getting on the ice
- Fireweed Mountain - A very demanding hike to the
summit of this guardian of McCarthy.
