This area showcases the sort of magical terrain that brings people to Alaska. The route has the perfect combination of features: jaw dropping views and more moderate terrain. The highlight of the trip includes up close and personal views of the vertical north face of Mt. Jarvis and its neighbors. Dramatic, ice covered peaks are not uncommon in Wrangell-St. Elias, but it is rare to be able to get this close to such impressive terrain without having to do mountaineering.

seven pass routeThis is the latest addition to our Explorer Series of treks. I spent several days last summer checking out this area and came away mightily impressed. The Explorer Series was kicked off last summer with the Martin Creek trek but that was a pretty aggressive route. The Tumble Creek trip will include some exploratory sections but with more moderate terrain.

We begin the trip in the northern section of Wrangell-St. Elias National Parkat the end of the Nabesna road. This area is a bit more remote than McCarthy where most of our treks originate. K-Air flys us into the backcountry one at a time in a Super Cub.

Our pilot lands on a tundra airstrip on the side of a mountain that is difficult to see even from the air. We begin by hiking a few miles away to the edge of a plateau where we set our first camp. You won't be able to stop gaping at the breathtaking views of in-your-face scenery and vertical, snow covered peaks.

Seven Pass RouteIf the weather is good we might spend an extra day in the area and take advantage of the photo opportunities and while doing a day hike. We'll then spend several days exploring the ridges and valleys to the north as we wind our way around and down to a gravel bar airstrip where we'll meet our pilot.

The last night of the trip will be in Nabesna. After hot showers and clean clothes we'll have a barbeque to celebrate our trip.

If you would like to do some exploring in a little traveled corner of the Alaskan wilderness on more moderate terrain, then this is a good one.
