Our trip begins with a scenic flight out of McCarthy that crosses
braided Alaskan rivers, scenic valleys and mountain peaks, before
dropping into the Bremner valley.
We'll hike from the airstrip to the site of a former gold mining
camp where we'll set up our base. From here we can go off hiking
in any direction for day tours to high mountain lakes, canyons
and alpine ridges. There is plenty of Alaskan history in this
area too. Down in the valley we can explore the ruins of old gold
mining operations that were active in the thirties and forties.
One of our side hikes may be to follow the remains of the old
aquaduct to the lake that was the source for the water that powered
the hydro plant in the valley below.
The variety of the surrounding terrain gives us a wide range
of hiking possibilities. There are also some wonderful spots tucked
away in the hills that make great overnight destinations including
a lovely lake surrounded by dramatic cliffs rising 1500 feet above
us.
We'll spend our last night at the lake and take a hike up to
the pass for stunning views of peaks both near and far.
There are plenty of terrific photo oppportunities in this richly
varied area.
