Some wilderness travelers may find that despite a good deal of prior backpacking experience, certain challenges such as river and glacier crossings can be a bit intimidating.
If you are interested in a route that includes such crossings but prefer to travel as an unguided group, our glacier seminar can give you just the experience and confidence you need to head out on your own.
Schedule a day of training the day before you are scheduled to depart on your backcountry trip. An experienced guide will take you out on to the Root Glacier for a hike on the ice that will be not only educational but a lot of fun.
We will depart in the morning from Kennicott to the nearby Root glacier. The day will be spent hiking on the ice and exploring the many fascinating features of the glacier and learning about how they form, grow, move and ultimately disappear. Along the way you will acquire valuable knowledge and experience that will give you the confidence you need for your trek.
This trip will be on snow-free ice so no roping up will be required.
Topics to be covered include:
| |
Proper fitting of crampons |
| |
Walking on crampons |
| |
Entering and exiting a glacier |
| |
Evaluating a glacier on a topographical map |
| |
Dealing with crevasses |
| |
Melt streams and mulans |
| |
Encountering snow on the ice |
Your guide will also discuss and demonstrate safe methods for making stream and river crossings. Gaining the confidence and experience to meet the challenges of glacier and river crossings will allow greater freedom in selecting a backcountry route.
