The Root Glacier and Stairway Icefall in winter.

Seasons Greetings from Trek Alaska!

         Trek Alaska

Hope everyone is having a great winter season. The photo above is a familiar view to anyone who has been to McCarthy and certainly if you've taken the Donoho glacier trek. But I thought you might enjoy seeing what the place looks like in winter.

Here is a shot of downtown McCarthy after the first snowfall. As you can see, things get pretty quiet around here in the winter.

Major News: Trek Alaska Breaks Ground on New Property!

         Trek Alaska

Bonanza Ridge is just one of our new views

I just couldn't sit on this one any longer and want to share with you a major development for Trek Alaska.

This summer we acquired 3 acres of land along the Kennicott River just a few miles from McCarthy!

This will become the new home and headquarters for Trek Alaska and we have big plans. The purchase was finalized this summer and we had time at the end of the season to get up a small storage building before the snows began to fall.

Our plans for the property include construction of a spruce log lodge and other supporting structures including a sauna! When complete, we will shift all of our operations to the new property. This will allow us to offer the first night's lodging for our guests in our own lodge.

We also plan to make the property available for groups to rent for retreats and other gatherings.

The property is easily accessible and yet is off the main roads and offers both privacy as well as some truly killer views in all directions of Bonanza Ridge, Fireweed Mountain and the Chugach Range. We hope to begin construction of the main lodge sometime this coming summer. We'll keep you posted.

These are a Few of my Favorite Things - Trek Wise Anyway

It's hard to have favorites in the Wrangells where there's no such thing as a bad trek. But here is what I like most about some of my faves...

Wrangell/Skyscraper
The ultimate for the feeling of rugged wilderness in truly remote backcountry. At most half a dozen people have done this route. A real challenge.

Seven Pass
We've had good luck with spotting bears on this one and it's the only route on which I've ever seen wolverine. A true classic and perennial favorite. Nice variety of terrain

Pyramid Peak
Every time you top out on a ridge your jaw drops at the amazing views. It's also a great mix of moderate and more challenging days.

Skolai/Wolverine
The terrain is just other-worldly. Last summer we must have seen at least 150 dall sheep in the Hasen Creek basin! Nuff said.

Donoho Glacier Trek
The BEST trek for spotting bears and the most amazing views all around of glaciers and soaring peaks including Mt. Blackburn.

---------------------------------------------------------------

And that's it for this issue, see you next year.

Till then.. happy trails!
