Wow, once
the calendar flips over to March everyone's mind set changes overnight.
A lot of folks started getting serous about their summer plans in
the last week or so. But remember, we can't hold a spot for you
without a confirmed reservation.
I got a lot of phone calls in the last week, which I really like.
A phone call is the best method for a first contact. In a 15 minute
chat I can get a much better understanding of what will work best
for you. I find it more personal and efficient for an initial contact
than email.
I promised some info on the Skolai Pass trip and here it is! This
area is simply stunning and the perfect destination for a moderate
level base camping style trip. Below is an introduction and links
to the web page for more details.

New Trip: Skolai Pass Base Camp
I'm excited to add this trip to the official lineup
for 2007. Skolai Pass, like Iceberg
Lake, is a unique location that offers a winning combination
of wildlife and stunning terrain. The area of Skolai Pass is broad
and lush, more like a valley than what you think of when you imagine
a pass.
We will be surrounded by dramatic peaks both near
and far. This will be a base camp trip so we can leave the heavy
loads in camp and enjoy or explorations with only day packs. And
there's a lot to explore. The Russell Glacier will definitely be
on our list of destinations as will another glacier with the intriguing
name of "Hole-in-the-Wall Glacier" Who could resist.
One of our days will be spent hiking up to Chitistone
Pass at the head of the stunning Chitistone Valley and the start
of the famous Goat Trail. If the group is up for it we might even
move our camp to Chitistone Pass for one night.
This trip will be a great opportunity for photography
so bring the good camera on this one.
Dates: Aug. 2-5. & Aug. 9-12
See the Skolai
Pass web page for more details and photos. There are package
pricing options that come with transportation and lodging.
Featured Trips: McCarthy Day
Trips and Overnighters
Not everyone has the time or inclination for an
extended back country trek in Wrangell-St. Elias. We also offer
day hikes out of McCarthy/Kennicott as well as overnight trips.
The focus on these trips is glacier exploration. You can go out
for a day of hiking
on the Root Glacier and still be back in Kennicott in time for
a shower and dinner! Trek Alaska provides the crampons and a professional
guide to instruct you in glacier travel. Learn how glaciers are
formed as we walk across the surface a sheet of ice hundreds of
feet thick.
And for a special treat, take one of our glacier
overnighters. We hike all the way across the route glacier and
make camp at the edge of the moraine on the other side of the Root
Glacier. This region is very heavily traveled by bears so there
is a very good chance of spotting some on the overnight trip. The
next day we hike back to town by a different route.
The McCarthy Getaway is a great option that includes three nights
of lodging and two day trip adventure\s: one out to the Root Glacier
and another along the moraine ridge of the Kennicott. Also included
is a 50 minute flightsee tour that is always a highlight! This package
is especially good for those who are on a larger tour of Alaska
and only plan to stay a few days in McCarthy/Kennicott area. It's
also perfect for Alaskans looking for a long-weekend trip to that
one part of Alaska that's been on the "must visit" list for too
long.
Invitation Only: Mt. Wrangell
to Nugget Creek
This trip is based on an exploratory that I did
last summer. It's a 9 day trip that traverses some of the most rugged
and awe-inspiring country that I've explored so far. But this one
is not for everyone. If you are in above average condition and are
looking for something above and beyond, then give me a call and
I'll tell you more as well as send you to an online photo gallery
of the trek. Because this is a more challenging trip, the group
will be kept small. I have some people already committed and a couple
who will likely be making a decision this week - so this one could
close out soon.
In closing I would like to pass on that McCarthy
has a home town hero this winter. Jeremy Keller is running his first
ever Iditarod Race! We're all pulling for him to make it to Nome
and he's past the half way point now. Go Jeremy!
That's it for this month. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Greg Fensterman
