The holidays
are just a memory as we settle into the heart of winter. Now is
the time to get serious about making plans and reservations for
a 2007 Alaska trip. People are always shocked to find that if they
wait too long, then hotels and rental cars are sold out in the peak
Alaska season. If you have questions about logistics or details
of one of the treks, just give me a call - 907.350.3710.
To help make your planning a bit easier, we can make your lodging
arrangements for you. In this edition I discuss your lodging options
in the McCarthy area.
This Month's Newsletter:
Free 2007 Photo CD
You may already have one of the Trek Alaska photo CDs, but we just
burned the 2007 CD which features new trips not included on last
year's disc. It's free, just send
your mailing address and you'll get the new disc in less than
a week.

Trip: Pyramid Peak Traverse
We have a group trip scheduled for the Pyramid
Peak route from July 12 - 18. There are currently 3, possibly
4 spots remaining on this great trip. I'm doing this one as a 7
day rather than the usual 6 to make the first day a little less
hectic. The trek rate for this trip is $1895. Also, I just put together
a package rate for readers of the newsletter. The package rate includes
van transportation to McCarthy from Anchorage and lodging in McCarthy
before and after the trip. Breakfast in McCarthy is also included
for a total package price of $2495 per person based on double occupancy.
For more on this trip call me at 907.350.3710. This trip will fill
soon.

Trip: Donoho Glacier Trek
This is always a popular trip, especially for
those looking for a good early season trek. We have a group trip
scheduled for June 24 - 28 that has a few openings. The Donoho
Glacier trek cost is $925 per person for a 5 day trek.
Because of the timing of this trip we can also
offer a package price that includes van transportation from Anchorage
and lodging in McCarthy. Call me about
this one and I'll be happy to go over the options and package pricing.

Logistics: McCarthy Lodging
Last month I talked about transportation and
presented the various options for getting from Anchorage to McCarthy.
This month I want to talk about your lodging options. If you are
planning to take a back country trek with a departure out of McCarthy
then your best bet is to stay at one of the hotels in McCarthy or
Kennicott.
McCarthy
Staying in McCarthy is the best choice at least for the night before
your trek. Typically we are departing for the McCarthy Airstrip
by 8:00 AM. If you're staying in McCarthy it's a short walk across
the street to meet the van that takes you to the airport for the
bush flight into the back country. There are two choices for lodging
in McCarthy: Ma Johnson's and the Lancaster Backpacker Hotel.
Lancaster
This is a real no-frills lodging with very small rooms. Great for
people who are trying to economize. A double occupancy room is $68.00
per night. Showers and bathrooms are down the hall.
Ma Johnson's
Ma Johnson's is an original structure from old McCarthy, though
it has been extensively remodeled in the last few years. This is
a more full-service hotel with wash stands in the room though bathroom
and showers are shared. The rooms are much nicer and larger - perfect
for pampering yourself a bit after a hard trek. Double occupancy
rooms are $159.00 per night which includes breakfast at McCarthy
Lodge. Package rate are available that include all meals.
Kennicott
Kennicott Glacier Lodge is located 5 miles up the road from McCarthy.
There is a van shuttle service between the two areas though it doesn't
run late into the evening. This is a more upscale hotel and is priced
accordingly. Pricing ranges from $189 to $249 per night for double
occupancy rooms. Some rooms have full private baths and better views
of the glacier.
B&Bs, Cabins.
There are many B&B accommodations in the area as well as private
cabins. These however are located anywhere from 1 to 5 miles from
McCarthy, making them an inconvenient place to stay if you are leaving
on a trek the following morning. Prices start at around $120 per
night for two people.
We are happy to put together a total package for
you and take care of your lodging arrangements. The cost to you
is the same is doing it yourself but it's one less logistical task
for you to deal with. Call me and we'll put together a trek and
lodging package to suit your needs.
That's it for this month. I look forward to hearing from you.
See you in January.
Regards,
Greg Fensterman
