Steamboat Hills – Father and Son

steamboat-010What better way to pass a cold winter day than revisiting some great trips from last summer. I’ll be posting a few short write-ups with photos over the next month or two.

It had been several years since we visited the Steamboat Hills region so I was thrilled to have the chance to go back not once, but twice this past August.

The great thing about this area is that you can plan treks that range from easy base camps to moderate backpacking routes. There is just so much to explore, especially all the alpine lakes.

Michelle and Sue on Gates Glacier

Michelle and Sue on Gates Glacier

I just got back the other day from a five day Donoho Glacier backpacking trek. The group was a couple of Aussie ladies from Perth and the lived up to my expectations of Australians as fun and adventurous folk.

We started off hiking across the Root Glacier and right away we had a great time exploring the ice. It was a little frustrating not being able to see the icefall on the first day due to some smoke conditions but things cleared up nicely the next day.

We spent two days camped near the Gates glacier and spent one day hiking around there on the Gates and checking out the fins, melt streams, moulins and other cool features.

On the way back to Kennicott we spent the last night camped out on the Kennicott glacier. Michelle was a little unnerved at first by all the sounds that a glacier makes and was certain that it was going to open up and swallow her whole at any moment.

But we all survived the night and made the easy hike in to Kennicott the next morning.

All in all it was a great backpacking trek and I got to learn more about Australia.

I’m heading out in the morning for a 7 day Pyramid Peak trek so I’ll post a bit about that trip inĀ  a week or so.

Happy Trails!

Matt leads the way up the ridge

Matt leads the way up the ridge

We did this trek twice this summer and both were great trips.

The first one was a father/daughter team from New York – John and Claire Hardin. It’s always a treat to take out family groups into this remote backcountry region. No people, no worries, I don’t think we even saw any planes fly overhead. If this isn’t quality family time I don’t know what is.

After several days of hiking up, over and around some high ridges the layover day at the base of Pyramid was appreciated by all.

The second group was a full house with five guests and a mixed bag of folks from all over including Canada, New Zealand and New York City. We got a late start due to the weather and it always takes a while to get everyone in to our Canyon Creek starting point since we fly in one at a time in a Super Cub.

So we only hiked (more…)
